Bakers and pastry chefs are responsible for making the delicious breads and pastries you eat at restaurants, grocery stores, and the bakery. Bakers mix ingredients and follow recipes to produce a wide variety of baked goods. While pastry chefs perform a similar function, they might also manage or supervise other kitchen workers, and organize and order supplies.
Building a Baking & Pastry Career
What education and career training do you need to become a baker or pastry chef? Certainly hands-on experience serves you well. But employers may take you more seriously with a degree under your poofy hat. In a culinary arts program, you'll learn how a professional kitchen works, how to plate a dessert, how to plan a menu, and how to create a baking schedule. A bachelor's degree goes one step further, and can help prepare you to manage the kitchen as well.
