Teacher's aides typically serve a variety of functions in classrooms. They may monitor students and provide instruction when the teacher is otherwise occupied. They may work with individual students who need additional help. They may assist teachers in assessing students and administering tests, and help develop lesson plans. While mentoring students, they are in turn mentored by experienced teachers.

Career Training for Teacher's Aides

Most teacher aide positions require some formal training, in the form of a certificate program or associate degree. Coursework typically includes instruction in educational trends, teaching methods, and classroom management. Becoming a teacher's aide can be a good first step to becoming a full-time credentialed teacher, which usually requires a bachelor's degree.
